WASHINGTON.- Un producto químico empleado para dar a la manteca sabor a palomita de maíz puede dañar los pulmones y las vías aéreas, informaron hoy expertos del Gobierno estadounidense.
Pruebas realizadas en ratones muestran que el diacetil, un componente artificial para saborizar la manteca, puede provocar una condición llamada bronquiolitis linfocítica, indicó el equipo de especialistas del Instituto Nacional de Ciencias de Salud Ambiental de Estados Unidos.
La entidad forma parte de los Institutos Nacionales de Salud del país norteamericano.
La enfermedad puede llevar a una bronquiolitis obliterante, una dolencia rara y debilitante observada en los trabajadores que envasan palomitas de maíz para hornos microondas y que se habría detectado al menos en un consumidor excesivo del producto.
Dos fabricantes de esas palomitas, ConAgra Foods Inc y Weaver Popcorn Co Inc, informaron recientemente que dejarían de usar diacetil.
Los ratones a los que se obligó a inhalar vapores del compuesto durante tres meses desarrollaron bronquiolitis linfocítica, señaló el equipo estadounidense.
"Este es uno de los primeros estudios que evalúa la toxicidad respiratoria del diacetil en niveles relevantes para la salud humana", manifestó en un comunicado Daniel Morgan, del instituto, cuyo equipo realizó estudio.
En un artículo publicado en la revista Toxicological Sciences, los investigadores señalaron que los resultados sugieren que la exposición en el lugar de trabajo al diacetil contribuye al desarrollo de bronquiolitis obliterante.
La enfermedad difícil de tratar produce síntomas vagos, como tos y falta de aire y empeora constantemente, según los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC por su sigla en inglés).
El Congreso estadounidense ha estado trabajando en un proyecto de ley para pedir una acción rápida a la Administración de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional, para que se limite la exposición al diacetil.
La Cámara de Representantes aprobó el proyecto el año pasado, pero el Senado aún no se ha expedido.
En tanto, la Administración de Alimentos y Fármacos de Estados Unidos (FDA) dijo en septiembre del 2007 que estaba investigando un informe de un hombre que contrajo la enfermedad después de comer varias bolsas de palomitas de maíz para microondas por día.
